Elizabeth had great trouble in finding a school to attend. No medical schoolwould accept
a woman student. So she studied by herself at first. She was helped by a fewdoctors who did believe that women should have the same chance to work as mendid. Elizabeth Blackwell became a doctor in 1849. She was thefirst woman in the United States to become a doctor.

In old days divers used to go down into the sea looking for ships that had sunkbecause they hoped to find gold and jewels. Now divers still search forvaluable things in sunken ships, but they also try to bring to the surface theships themselves ot parts of them. The value of different kinds of metals(金属) has increased greatly over thepast twenty or thirty years and even though a ship has been under the sea formany years, it may be worth a great deal.
