Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 21 – According to Heilongjiang Daily, the red-crowned crane has come out as the only candidate for the national bird for China after a public poll. The State Forestry Bureau has submitted this result of the poll to the State Council.
The State Forestry Bureau and China Wildlife Protection Association (CWPA) jointly launched a nationwide activity to select China’s national bird, and set up an expert group for appraisal of the result. In 2005, when CWPA carried out an online survey jointly with China News Service and sina.com to select the national bird of China. Some 65% of respondents chose Red-crowned Crane.
More than 40 countries currently have national birds. The United States designated the bald eagle as its national bird 200 years ago.
