Students should not quit school because of poverty, govt
来源:英语学习网
Chinanews, Beijing, July 18 – Chinese government gives unprecedentedly high concern to students who might leave school only because they can't afford to pay the tuition fees. The government vows that no students should leave school because of the straitened circumstances of their families.

Recently, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance held two press conferences to address the issue. At the press conferences, the two central government departments announced that they would take a series of concrete policies to help poor students to go to college. For those who have just received the college's letters of admission and yet fear they might not be able to pay the tuition fees, this is no doubt good news.

For the coming fall semester, the central government will increase the fund used to support poor students to pay their tuition fees from 1.8 billion yuan last year to 9.5 billon yuan this year. In addition, local governments will also allocate some money, making the total fund in this aspect reach 15.4 billion yuan this year. Next year, the fund will be further raised to 30.8 billion yuan.

With the national fiscal input, the loans offered by banks, and the special fund provided by every school, the total allocated money to poor students will reach 50 billion yuan. This money will benefit 4 million college students and 16 million vocational school students every year. On average, of every 100 college students, 20 will benefit from this policy.

The policy serves as another important measure taken by the Chinese government in its efforts to promote fair opportunities in education and in realizing social justice.

Two years ago, at a press conference, the then minister of education Zhang Baoqing once severely criticized some local governments. These local governments, as Zhang said, were willing to spend billions of yuan on a project. However, when they were asked to allocate some money to help poor students, local officials would find numerous excuses to turn down the request.

The former minister has already retired from his job. He must have been very happy to see that the fund aiding system for poor students, a system he advocated so energetically during his term of service, has been crowned with great achievements today.
